The ABCD Method is a method that is used to identify what students are able to do and gives a clear picture of what students need to do to be successful. These are also known as objectives.

Audience:

who is this objective obtained to

Behavior:

describes what the student is able to do; must be observable and measurable

Condition:

any resources, limitations, or materials given while completing objective

Degree:

the level or criteria student succeeds; to what degree of mastery

ABCD Example:

Given four examples of ABCD instructional objectives, ELEC 316 students will work in groups of 2-3 to accurately identify the audience, behavior, condition, and degree of each example.

This visual above is also important to keep in mind when creating objectives with the ABCD Method. The object must be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based in order to be a clear objective for students to understand. If it’s missing any of the following parts of SMART, the objective won’t be as clear.

The Importance of Observation in Early Childhood Education

During class today, we were able to listen to a guest speaker, Lauren Wagner. She gave us a variety of examples of types of assessments to implement in a classroom. I noticed that most of the assessments were not the same as when I was in elementary school. No a days, teachers are more focused on the student's progress rather than the letter grade which should be the most important. I noticed that the assessments were engaging and short as well. I also got to hear how important it is to frequently assess students to keep their work for data to refer back to for lesson planning and adjusting to the student's needs. This is very important to keep in mind in the future classroom.
